Airport Name : Playa de Oro; code ZLO.
Location : 43 km northwest of downtown
Manzanillo.
Facilities : The small but efficient terminal
building
has several shops plus a restaurant, bar,
and rental car counters. An interesting
mural by Colima artist Jorge Chavez Carrillo
and Colima Indian decorative
motifs are visible within the terminal.
From the airport : frequent van transfers
are available at reasonable rates. Rates
are $6-8 US per person from the airport
to most hotels in Manzanillo. If you are
headed north towards the Costa Alegre,
rates will be considerably higher ($60-80
US per trip). All major rental car companies
have airport counters.
To get around town, you can always find
taxis near the resorts and visitor attractions.
Taxis are harder to find after
hours. At more remote beach locations
special arrangements should be made
for your return trip.
Manzanillo proper
does not offer a lot of
sightseeing diversity. However, the city's
zocalo is of interest. Located directly
across from the waterfront, see its Victorian-
era bandstand, benches, street lights,
and two busts of Father Hidalgo and
Benito Juarez. The square becomes quite
lively in the evenings. Beyond the zocalo,
the downtown area is beginning to attract
more visitors, thanks to efforts by the local
government to restore and renovate the
area. The recently re-modeled malecon
(seaside walkway) provides visitors a
relaxed, peaceful setting for morning or
afternoon walks. |
