Airport: General Manuel Márquez de León International
Airport; code LAP. Located: 16
km north of La Paz. Note: Aero California
(code JR) is headquartered here. It has
frequent service to mainland Mexico destinations,
making La Paz an excellent hub
for Sea of Cortés and mainland Mexico
exploration.
Getting Around: From the
airport, frequent van transfers are available at reasonable
rates. Rental
cars are available at the airport and at
many hotels.
To get around La Paz taxis are plentiful,
although they can be difficult to find late in
the evening. Most rides around town are in
the $15-25 peso range. Bus service to
Los Cabos is offered by three companies
with frequent departures throughout the
day. Rates are currently about $8 US to
Cabo San Lucas and about $9 US to San
José del Cabo.
FERRIES:
Ocean-equipped automobile/truck ferries
operate between the Baja Peninsula (La
Paz) and Sinaloa (Topolobampo/Mazatlán).
There is also service between Sonora (Guaymas) and Baja (Santa
Rosalía). A
new route (La Paz to Guaymas) is now in
operation. Air conditioned accommodations
range from a simple padded seat to a
private cabin on some ships. The ferries
cater mostly to truck traffic and are not recommended
for the usual tourist.
Topolobampo’s terminal is located near
the PEMEX facility. Mazatlan’s terminal is
in the harbor. Ferries depart La Paz from
the Pichilingue Ferry Terminal, located 19
km north of La Paz. The taxi to the ferry
terminal from downtown La Paz is $85
pesos. (See Ferry Schedules and Rates
chart, “After You Arrive” documents or
